Our History

Since 1927, the Murraylands and Riverland Local Government Association (MRLGA) has a proud history of bringing councils together to advocate for regional priorities, strengthen partnerships and deliver better outcomes for communities across eastern South Australia.

Originally established as the Murray and Mallee Local Government Association, the organisation evolved into the MRLGA to better reflect the identity, geography and shared interests of the region it serves. Today, the Association represents eight member councils, providing a unified voice on issues that extend beyond individual council boundaries.

For many years, the MRLGA has championed regional priorities including infrastructure, economic development, water security, tourism, workforce attraction, environmental sustainability and community wellbeing. Through collaboration and advocacy, the Association works with all levels of government and regional stakeholders to create opportunities for growth and prosperity.

Representing more than 50,000 square kilometres of South Australia, the Murraylands and Riverland region is home to thriving communities, productive agricultural industries, world-class tourism experiences and the iconic Murray River. Together, our councils share a commitment to building a strong, connected and sustainable future for the region.

Today, the MRLGA continues to provide leadership, advocacy and collaboration, ensuring the collective interests of the Murraylands and Riverland are heard and supported for generations to come.

Acknowledgement of Country

We would like to acknowledge the traditional land and waters of the First Peoples of the River Murray and Mallee Region. We pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging, and acknowledge that their cultural and heritage beliefs are important to the Ngarrindjeri, Ngaiawang (Nigh-uh-won), Ngawait (Nar–wait), Nganguruku (Nun-guh-rah-ku), Erawirung (Era-wirung), Ngintait (Nin-tait), Ngaralte (Nar-alte), and Ngarkat (Nar-kat) people. We also pay respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and acknowledge the deep feelings of attachment and relationship to country.
