Our Strategies
Drought Response and Preparedness
The Murraylands and Riverland Local Government Association (MRLGA) plays a key role in strengthening drought preparedness, resilience and recovery across the region. We advocate on behalf of our member councils and communities to ensure regional needs are understood and considered by State and Federal Governments. By gathering local intelligence, facilitating collaboration between councils, industry and government agencies, and contributing to regional and statewide resilience initiatives, we help shape programs, policies and investment that support farming businesses, families and communities. The MRLGA also works to improve coordination across drought resilience projects, promote knowledge sharing, support access to information and services, and strengthen the region’s capacity to prepare for, respond to and recover from the impacts of drought and a changing climate.
Public Health and Wellbeing
The Murraylands and Riverland Local Government Association (MRLGA) supports the delivery of healthier, more connected and resilient communities across the region through strategic leadership, collaboration and advocacy in public health and wellbeing.
We coordinate regional public health planning and reporting, facilitate partnerships between councils, government agencies and community
organisations, and advocate for investment that delivers positive health outcomes for local communities. Through regional collaboration, knowledge sharing, access to data and specialist expertise, we help councils identify emerging health priorities, develop evidence-based responses and implement initiatives that improve community wellbeing. The MRLGA also works to strengthen participation in recreation, sport and community programs, foster cross-sector partnerships, and ensure regional voices contribute to the development of state and national public health strategies.
Waste Management and Resource Recovery
The Murraylands and Riverland Local Government Association (MRLGA) provides regional leadership in waste management, resource recovery and circular economy initiatives, helping councils deliver efficient, sustainable and cost-effective waste services for their communities. We facilitate collaboration between member councils to improve service delivery, strengthen contract management, identify procurement efficiencies and support long-term strategic planning. The MRLGA coordinates regional waste education and community engagement programs that encourage waste reduction, recycling and responsible resource use, while also exploring innovative opportunities to increase resource recovery and circular economy outcomes across the region. Through advocacy, industry partnerships and evidence-based planning, we work to ensure the Murraylands and Riverland is well positioned to respond to emerging challenges, regulatory change and future opportunities in waste management and sustainability.
Transport and Infrastructure
The Murraylands and Riverland Local Government Association (MRLGA) works with member councils to strengthen regional transport networks and infrastructure that support economic growth, community connectivity and liveability. Through regional collaboration and strategic planning, we coordinate infrastructure priorities, advocate for investment in local and regional road networks, and help councils maximise funding opportunities for essential transport and asset projects. The MRLGA facilitates information sharing, long-term asset planning and coordinated approaches to infrastructure delivery, ensuring regional needs are effectively represented to State and Federal Governments. We also contribute to transport policy development and infrastructure planning processes, helping to secure sustainable, future-focused outcomes that support the movement of people, goods and services across the Murraylands and Riverland region.

Acknowledgement of Country
